The C-BASS group, as a result of participating in the WCPC training, decided to form a community team that would initially examine the problem of drunk driving-especially in light of the numerous deaths and injuries from a series of crashes during the summer of 2000. The C-BASS community team sponsored a town meeting on September 26, 2000 at East Anchorage High School, to address the issues of drunk driving and the resulting consequences. We have done follow-up on this this initial town meeting by presenting the resulting information to local community/neighborhood councils and organizations at their meetings. The goal of these activities is to solicit from the community, what they plan to do to address the drunken driving issue. We believe that accountabilitiy is essential and we want the community to be the primary leader in this effort, not the agencies, government or providers. C-BASS hopes to mobilize the surrounding community to not only address the drunk driving issue but other damaging issues in our community.
The members of C-BASS have chosen to continue to function as a collaborative body, who via information dissemination and referrals hope to continue as change agents in the Anchorage community. We also continue to look for other members of our community, who share our interests and would like to join our group or be strong supporters of C-BASS.
